WHAT HAPPENED
The fire originated in the kitchen of this single-story home on Bedford Avenue, burning hot enough to consume the ceiling drywall entirely and char the roof framing above before it was extinguished — leaving the 14'10"×13'8" kitchen a total loss with exposed rafters, destroyed cabinetry, appliances, and debris covering every surface. From there, the event became a whole-house smoke migration problem: superheated gases and soot-laden air moved through the hallway and into every room, depositing heavy black soot streaks on walls and ceilings from floor to crown, coating contents in the living room and two bedrooms, blackening the attached garage interior, and traveling down the stairwell into portions of the basement. The scope of smoke and soot contamination extended well beyond what was visible at first glance — every wall surface, every ceiling plane, every soft content in the structure required assessment, and the kitchen itself required complete structural demo before any reconstruction could begin.
A key finding on this job: smoke and soot traveled the full length of the home from the kitchen through the hallway corridor and into both bedrooms, the living room, and the attached garage — meaning every room in the 2,271 ft² structure required assessment and treatment. The basement spaces showed fallout soot on exposed framing as well.

Fire origin confirmed and full-home soot mapping
Crew confirmed the kitchen as the fire origin based on structural burn patterns — ceiling consumed to rafters, all four walls charred, total content loss. Soot mapping was conducted across all 8 spaces to document the full contamination footprint. Photos and written assessment produced for the insurance file.

Emergency board-up and structural stabilization
The kitchen ceiling opening and any compromised exterior penetrations were boarded and tarped to secure the structure from weather intrusion. Utilities were confirmed shut off to the affected zones before any crew entered the kitchen area.

Contents assessment and documentation
All soft contents — bedding, clothing, personal items in the bedrooms and living room — were documented prior to movement. Items potentially salvageable via ozone treatment or professional cleaning were separated from total-loss items. Full inventory produced for insurance contents claim.

Kitchen demo and fire debris removal
The kitchen was fully demolished — removing remaining ceiling drywall, charred wall materials, destroyed cabinetry, and all fire debris down to the framing. Char-affected framing members were documented for structural evaluation. Fire debris removed from garage and stairwell areas as well.

Soot cleaning — walls, ceilings, and surfaces
Chemical sponge dry-cleaning and wet-washing were performed on all soot-affected surfaces throughout the home — hallway, living room, bedrooms, garage, and stairwell. HEPA air scrubbers were deployed across all spaces to capture airborne particulate during the cleaning process.

Deodorization — whole structure
Hydroxyl generators and thermal fogging were used throughout the home to neutralize smoke odor embedded in wall cavities, carpet, and soft materials. Deodorization is conducted after surface cleaning to address odor at the molecular level — not just at the surface.

Full documentation and adjuster scope submission
Before-and-after photo documentation produced for every room. Moisture mapping of any fire suppression water was conducted and documented. A complete scope of work was submitted to the adjuster covering emergency services, kitchen structural demo, whole-home soot cleaning, deodorization, content loss documentation, and full reconstruction estimate.
